South Africa Opt to Bat First

On Day 1 of the second Test between Team India and South Africa, the visitors won the toss and chose to bat first at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma made this decision, hoping to set a strong base in this crucial match of the India vs South Africa Test series.

India’s Strategy Under Stand-in Captain Pant

With regular skipper Shubman Gill ruled out due to a neck injury, Rishabh Pant has stepped in as India’s 38th Test captain. Pant remained upbeat despite losing the toss, stating that India was “eager to bowl first.” India made two changes to their playing XI, bringing in Nitish Kumar Reddy and Sai Sudharsan.

Tight First Session as India Seeks Wickets

In the morning session, India looked desperately for early breakthroughs. Jasprit Bumrah, with his pace, came close to trapping Aiden Markram, but a reprieve came when KL Rahul dropped a relatively easy catch at first slip. As of the live score at one point, South Africa were 58/0 in 17 overs.

Guwahati Pitch Looks Better, According to Pant

Ahead of the contest, Pant praised the Guwahati pitch, calling it firmer and more balanced than Kolkata’s Eden Gardens track. He added that the surface “will eventually turn after the first two days, but it should be a good contest,” predicting more swing for fast bowlers early, followed by support for spinners later in the Test.

Stakes High for Both Sides

With Indian cricket fans watching closely, this Test is more than just a match — it’s India’s opportunity to level the two-Test Freedom Trophy series at 1–1. South Africa, meanwhile, aim to seal a clean sweep and win the series 2–0.

As the afternoon session looms, India will look to strike early, while South Africa’s batters aim to build a strong foundation against a motivated Team India.
